How Hands In works?

(technical level)

Hands In provides a white-label checkout solution for your customers to pay as a group for any goods and/or services provided on your e-commerce platform.

To make group payments, customers need to click the Hands In checkout button provided on your website. This will initiate a group payment request to the Hands In API which will collect some information about the group payment, needed to create a group payment session.

Once the data is collected, the Hands In API sends back a response to the payment initiator which carries a unique group ID and a group invite link.

The group payment initiator can then decide to share the group payment invite link through various options including scanning a QR code, sending an SMS, email, etc.

Other participants can then join the group and approve their own payment. When a member approves their payment, a pending transaction to send their share directly to the merchant is created. This money is frozen in the member's account. When all members have approved their share, the transactions are all processed, paying the share amount from each member to the merchant.

Any money frozen for a group payment that expires or cancels will then be unfrozen and returned to the customer's bank balance.

Information collected before group payment session is created

  • the initiator's personal details.
  • the number of people in the group.
  • the number of ways to split the payment.

Once the data is collected, The Hands In API sends back a response to the payment initiator which carries a unique group ID and a group invite link.

The Payment initiator can then decide to share the payment invite link through various link-sharing options such as QRcode, text message, email, etc.

Other members of the group can then decide to join the group and initiate their own payment. When a group member initiates their payment, the equivalent of their group payment share is frozen in their account.

This will finally be deducted from all the accounts when all the members of the group have made their payments.

The total amount is then credited into the merchant's account directly.

Note

Hands In does not charge any participant of a group until the tipping point (total amount) is met. This typically occurs when all the participants of the group have approved their individual payments.
